After mechanical wristwatches enjoyed years of popularity, they were eventually replaced by watches that housed battery-operated quartz movements. But many people still collect, and even wear, mechanical wrist watches to this day. Mechanical wristwatches, which are also known as "Wind Ups", aren't powered by a tiny battery instead , what "makes them tick" are coiled mainsprings that are run by a series of springs, gears, and wheels. If you have one of these timepieces, you can learn how to repair common mechanical wristwatch problems. However with the modern watch being primarily quartz these days, and mass market prices being very competitive replacing the movement has become second nature for watch repairers when problems arise with the time keeping for general non expensive quartz watches. Below is a very brief outline of a few commonly used tools and their guide lines.
The first watch tools you will need to replace most batteries are a case opener and tweezers, be very careful and make sure you support the watch face by using a watch casing cushion to avoid scratches to the face. They are many different case openers available and they are very useful as they come with different pins to fit different watch backs. Most backs will twist clockwise to unscrew (a jaxa tool is best used for screwbacks) but a few will go anticlockwise, check your watch manual for information regarding this. Once you have the back off, simply use the tweezers to carefully lift out the battery and reverse the procedure.
Spring Bar Tool (Watch strap changing)
Spring bar forked end for strap changes and a pointed end for use with watch cases that feature pin holes in the lug ends. For a strap change simply insert the forked end between the lug end and your watch strap, Push down and pull away from the lug end to release the spring bar or pin. You can then use the tool to compress the spring bar when fitting the new watch strap.
The Jaxa watch back opener
The Jaxa case opener tool by Anchor is designed to open the majority of waterproof watch cases. Manufactured in steel, the tool features a single handle to enable one-handed use. It comes supplied with four sets of chucks, which can easily be fitted into and removed from the tool as required. Each set of chucks features a different shape to enable the user to employ the tool on a variety of waterproof watch back styles, including polygonal, slotted, holed and grooved designs. The Jaxa back opener is one of the most useful tools that you could invest in when starting watch repairing/maintenance.
The Snap watch back opener
This style of watch back is held on by friction and you must pry it off using a snap watch back removing tool to get to the battery compartment. There is generally a notch or indentation in the case that will allow you to get the tool underneath the back. Great care must be taken when using a tool to pry up the back to avoid scratching the back of the case.
